Praia da Luz like most towns on the Algarve coast was originally a fisherman's village. Even though today it has grown into a popular seaside resort it still manages to retain a lot of its old world charm and at the same time offering the holidaymaker golden sands, superb dining and first class facilities. The bay is protected to the East by the famous Rocha Negra (black rock) cliff, a product of the Monchique region's volcano lava flow from some 150 million years ago. Luz has a lovely, long sandy beach which is overlooked by the town itself. An exceptional patterned cobbled promenade ( Avenida dos Pescadores ) runs from just below the pretty Church of Nossa Senhora da Luz ( Our Lady of the Light ) along the whole of the seafront to the cluster of beach bars. The promenade is normally busy with many craft stalls during high season and there are also several cafe/bars, restaurants and gift shops.

Broadband is widely available in Portugal and is known as 'banda larga'. It is considered to function better than broadband services in the UK due to the fact that Portugal was one of the last countries to embrace broadband technology and thus has a system with newer design and technology. Western Algarve

The west of the Algarve is without doubt one of the most beautiful and authentic regions in all of Portugal.

How to Get There

For those travelling internationally, flying to Faro airport is the best option. Faro Airport lies just two and a half miles from Faro- the capital of the Algarve. If you're making your way to Lagos, you'll have to plan ahead for the 90km journey from Faro airport to Lagos.

While there's no public transport hub at Faro airport, Eva buses operate between the airport and Faro City, and from Faro City you can catch a bus or a train to Lagos. A bus takes approximately two hours and ten minutes to reach Lagos, and a train takes about one hour and fifty minutes.

You can make use of public transport or you could rent a car or jump in a cab to the Western Algarve which is under an hour.
